thoughts from a Christ follower

Give thanks in all circumstances

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NIV)

This week God has been speaking to me about being thankful in all circumstances. To be honest this is sometimes a great struggle because I don’t always like or understand the circumstances that God has allowed. However I am learning an attitude of gratitude … I don’t mean to sound trite or to just emptily quote a cliche, but I am realizing that thankfulness is a learned behavior. It is not just tied to “good” circumstances but is based on the fact that we have a GOOD God.

In 1 Thessalonians Paul, the author, reminds the believers there that it all begins with the faith that God, through His Spirit, called them into when they heard the good news that Jesus had died for their sins and was raised for their justification. It is only through the goodness of God that we can experience life in the first place. We can learn to rejoice even if life’s circumstances leave us unhappy because our hope is in Christ. As we begin to believe that God is good we learn to stop trying to control everything as if it depends upon us and instead trust His control and prayerfully depend upon Him. As we release to him our anxieties, our overwhelming burdens, and all of our circumstances by praying about everything we receive his peace and find rest in his care.

So whether life seems good or looks bleak we can be thankful because the good God who calls us into a relationship with Him is faithful to continue his work in our lives. If we truly believe that and trust him with our lives then we can be truly thankful in any and all circumstances.

Give thanks to The Lord for he is good. His steadfast love endures forever. Ps 136:1
