Perseverance through Prayer

Some days I just want to throw in the towel and give up – it seems as if life has dealt me so many blows that I just can’t take another punch.  Have you ever been there?  Are you feeling that way now?  Don’t give up – give it to God instead.

One day Jesus told his disciples a story to show that they should always pray and never give up.  Luke 18:1

The key to perseverance is prayer – continual ongoing conversation with God.  The very idea that we can connect with the Sovereign Creator of the universe should be enough to give us a glimmer of hope in itself.  Actually following through and calling out to Him refuels our faith, rebuilds our strength, and re-energizes our life.

Jesus makes it all possible – He has given us access to the Father through his death and resurrection.  Ephesians 3:12 In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.  He understands our situations and empathizes with our struggles (Hebrews 4:14-16), and invites us to enter the holy place with confidence that we might receive mercy and find the help that we so desperately need.

In Luke 18 he teaches his followers to always pray and not give up.  He gives them several reasons that they can find hope through prayer to the Father:

  • God will take care of his people vs2-8
  • God will exalt those who humble themselves and call to him in prayer vs 9-14
  • God honors simple child-like faith  vs 15-17
  • Our impossibilities become possible with God vs 27
  • No one who gives it all over to God comes away empty vs 18-30
  • God is for us – Jesus died in our place vs 31 -34
  • Faith in Jesus leads to seeing things that we never have before vs 35 -43

Don’t give up – even if you have hit the bottom, look up and give it to God in prayer.  Release all of your burdens to him and receive His peace.  This doesn’t mean throwing up your hands and saying, let go and let God.  Instead this is moving forward, pressing on by taking small steps of obedience  – doing what you can, while you wait for God to do what you cannot.  God is on your side  – start praying for a change
