Love is Sacrifice

Many of us can remember the song, “I wanna know what love is”, and that great line…”I want you to show me”. We identify with it so well because life often leaves us longing for a definition of real love.  So what is love?  We often wonder the best way to show someone love, but we have been given a great example – God showed us what love truly is:

God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world
so that we might have eternal life through him.  This is real love—not
that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take
away our sins.  1John 4:9,10 NLT

So we can see here that love is sacrifice, giving of oneself for the betterment of another.  As we learn and grow in our understanding of God’s love for us, we are then able to really love others.

Jesus said, There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.  John 15:13 NLT   Who will cross our paths today that God is calling us to love in this way?  May the love of God flow through us into the lives of those that He brings our way.  Let’s love others sacrificially…just like Jesus loved us!

For those of us who are married God calls us to love our spouses this same way.  Men, He calls us to love our wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself for it.  Ephesians 5:25  Instead of just giving her flowers or candy, we are called to give her ourselves…she needs to know that you love her more than you love you.  Ladies…you are called to respect your husband, I know we don’t always deserve it, but God knows that we men need to be your heros.  Ephesians 5:33  We must look into the love that you have learned from God to truly love each other.

Here are the characteristics of this sacrificial love that we are called to love others with: Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.  Love never fails.  1Corithians 12:4-8a  NLT
