Giving up Discouragement

So I have been thinking about Lent…I usually don’t do anything with it but this year I have decided to give up discouragement.  I think that if we are honest, most of us would have to admit we all have discouraging thoughts that invade our minds at sometime throughout our day.  Well it seems that I have a bent towards these thoughts…they come much more than I would like to admit and if I am not careful to deal with them, they quickly lead me into a mess of melancholy.

So as the Easter season approaches I have decided to combat these thoughts instead of dwelling in them.  Each time I have a discouraging thought I am going to stop and pray, thanking God for his loving care and praising Him for being my God and Savior.  I am going to pick a verse each day to think on throughout the day.  I may need your help – please feel free to share your encouraging verses with me.

Discouragement isn’t a curse that you are just stuck with, it is a choice that is determined by your focus.  God help me to focus on you and to remember the words that you spoke through your prophet Isaiah: Do not be afraid, for I am with you.  Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you and help you.  I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.  Isaiah 41:10

I am choosing to not allow the thief to steal the encouragement that comes from knowing and following Jesus…I am going to remember the words of Jesus, The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy;  I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.  John 10:10 NIV

The Lenten Season is a great time for this battle because the greatest encouragement of all time is the  resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.  God restores our hope by giving us life in Him who has overcome death for us.  All the praise, glory, and honor is His.
