What If

What If? This is a question that usually weakens us and leaves us discouraged, but what if we learned to ask it in such a way that it strengthens us and leaves us encouraged.

Our what if questions shape our responses to the world around us and the life we live. Our view of God determines the kind of what if questions that we ask…our view of God has everything to do with our daily lives.

The story of Daniel and his three friends inspire us to ask the right kind of what if questions. Daniel writes to share two vital truths:
1. God is sovereign over everything and everyone
2. God’s kingdom is coming

• These two truths are the foundation of our worship and of our hope…they form the mindset necessary for the right ‘what if’ questions

Here are some “What if” questions that strengthen and encourage us:

1. What if we realized that God could be trusted, even when the rug is pulled out from under our feet and our world seems to be turned upside down? Ch. 1. Daniel trusted God and decided that he would continue to worship and hope in only him. When everything seems to fall apart, it becomes clear to us that we have been hoping in something other than God, that thing has become an object of worship. If we learn to trust in God’s sovereign control and in his plan we would find that life with God is far better than anything this life has to offer Daniel 1:1-8; (more than we can imagine Ephesians 3:20). Choose to trust Him and don’t settle for less…I’m learning.

2. What if we realized that God has the answers to all of  the questions that are bigger than life? What if we asked him fully expecting him to answer as if our lives depended upon those answers? Daniel 2:18-23 (vs 28 God gave the answer, 45). Don’t you just hate it when heaven seems to be silent…Maybe the answer has been given and we just don’t like it. Part of worship and finding hope is trusting God’s wisdom and surrendering to God’s plan,  even when it seems to make no earthly since. The answers that we seek are waiting for us…if we ask God in faith (trusting with a resolve to follow), are we willing to seek them in God’s wisdom? (James 1:5-8)  If we learn to look to God for answers we will find the direction that we need is waiting for us in the Bible … 2 Timothy 3:16,17

3. What if we had faith to worship God as God no matter what? Even if it means that we have to walk through fires that are threatening to destroy us? In Daniel 3 we find a great challenge and encouragement. Shadrach, Meshack, and Abednego are told to bow to and worship the huge golden statue or die. Their response, “we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.” How did they stand? They believed that there God was able to deliver them…do we believe like that. What if we only worshipped the one true God? What if we believed that he was worth more than life itself? 3:16 – 18. If we had this kind of faith we would see that God goes through the fires of life with His people Vs 25, Isaiah 43:2. We can stand and walk through the fires because our God is in control, his kingdom is coming, and he loves us more than we can imagine.

What if we could live out what we say we believe? We could be strong and courageous and say goodbye to weakness and discouragement.
