thoughts from a Christ follower

Christmas Spirit?

Have you ever said or heard, “I need to get in the Christmas spirit”?  Why is it that this is such an elusive thing?  I think perhaps it is because we define it incorrectly – we often think of the Christmas spirit as some warm fuzzy feeling that comes from doing a lot of Christmassy stuff.  However, the busier things get and the more we add to our Christmas lists, the less “Christmas spirit” we seem to have.  Perhaps a better definition of Christmas spirit is found in Mary’s praise to God in Luke 1:46-55 – Oh, how my soul praises the Lord.  How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior!  For he took notice of his lowly servant girl, and from now on all generations will call me blessed.  For the Mighty One is holy, and he has done great things for me.  He shows mercy from generation to generation to all who fear him.  His mighty arm has done tremendous things!  He has scattered the proud and haughty ones.  He has brought down princes from their thrones and exalted the humble.  He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away with empty hands.  He has helped his servant Israel and remembered to be merciful. For he made this promise to our ancestors, to Abraham and his children forever.”   From these verses I think we can define Christmas Spirit as finding joy in God’s interaction with us.   Mary’s response and outpouring of praise flows from a heart that is overwhelmed with the amazing reality that God has chosen to enter His creation through her womb.  She would be the portal through which Jesus would come to earth.

Or how about the Shepherds in Luke 2:8–20, they were amazed as they went to see about this awesome event that the angel said had taken place: “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.  vs 11,12  After going to see Jesus for themselves, they left rejoicing over what they found: it was just as the angel said: Jesus, the Savior had come!  The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. vs 20  They celebrated the long anticipated arrival of Jesus by praising God and telling everyone about it.

As we consider these two stories we find the secret to Christmas Spirit – realization of what God has done for us in the birth of Jesus Christ and response to His coming.  He has come to us even though we did nothing to deserve a visit from Him and has offerred to us a Savior, Christ the Lord.  To experience real Christmas Spirit this year we must take an honest look at ourselves and Jesus, realizing the great gift that He has given us by coming to be our Savior and responding to His arrival by believing that He is who the angel said.  Finding Christmas Spirit is as easy as this – Celebrate Jesus by praising God and telling everone about Him!  Jesus, the promised Savior has come, He is Christ the Lord, and will save all who believe in Him.
