Directed – Led by God’s Spirit

I often talk with people who say something like this: “I wish I could hear from God, I wish He would tell me what to do or how to do this or that.”  Here is the key – God wants us to know His Will and to live by His Direction.  He does this through His Holy Spirit.  Before going to the cross, coming back to life, and ascending to heaven Jesus promised the disciples that He would not leave them alone, but ask the Father to send them another one just like Him (John 14:15-17; 16:13-15).

The question that often times evades us as believers is, How and when do we get the Holy Spirit?  The answer is found in Acts 2:38,39 – when a person places their faith in Jesus Christ they recieve the Holy Spirit and become a dwelling place for Him (1Corinthians 6:19,20; Ephesians 1:13,14).

Now that we know how we receive the Spirit we must now consider how we are filled with or controlled by the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18).  This comes through total dependency and total surrender.  It is not a one time action, but a continual one (Romans 12:1,2).  To get here we have to let go of self and hold onto God:

1.  We have to get past our past (Philippians 3:12-14) – we must get over our failures and our successes and instead strive and stretch for what God is calling us to be in Christ.

2.  We have to get beyond our present – let go of our plans and agendas and get onto God’s plan and purpose for us.  Instead of doing our thing and asking God to bless it, we must join God in doing the things He is working in and blessing.

3.  We must embrace what God wants us to become by looking through the eyes of faith to envision ourselves as a vessel for His use.  Faith will allow us to hope for that which we cannot see.

Action Steps

Ask God to control your life by surrendering everything to Him: surrender is not about defeat but is where we will find victory.  (Matthew 16:25)

Acknowledge God in every area of life by learning to live in complete dependence upon Him.  (Proverbs 3:1-7)

Access God’s Spirit by accepting Christ by faith, believing wholly in Him (Ephesians 2:8-10)-choosing to go His way – it is the best way.   He will enlighten and guide us through the Bible (Ephesians 1:17-25).  He will enable us to follow God’s truth and principles for life (Galatians 6:16-23).

The life that you desire is waiting for you- give up your life and embrace the life that Christ died to give you: a life that is eternal and abundant in Him.  You can listen to a message on the Spirit-led life, “Directed” @

  1. In my christian walk I have really struggled with SURRENDER. I think it is often thought of negatively, like being defeated or losing. I was taught that surrender to God is not a matter of giving up,being defeated, but a matter of giving in and letting God bless me the way He wants to. Surrender is also not a one shot deal for me. I have to continually give in to His Will.
